Remembering the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh, Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi  is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the country. The most famous celebrations are held in Mumbai and Pune where large idols of Lord Ganesh are offered to the nearby sea or river on Anant Chaturdashi or the 10th day from Ganesh Chaturthi. In Sanskrit, the word Ganesh means ‘lord of a group’. No wonder Ganesh chaturthi is known as a time when neighbourhood people get together with the sole objective of worshipping the Lord.

Earlier this festival was solely a household one, with individual houses performing pooja and immersing idols. It was political thinker and activist Bal Gangadhar Tilak who reinstated the fact that this celebration should be a community one, with each mohalla, housing society or other organization having its own community Ganpati pandal which is worshiped by all the people.

On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, people set up idols of Lord Ganesh in their homes, societies and mohallas.  For 10 days there are poojas, aartis and bhajans every day until the 10th day, when the idol is immersed in a nearby water body. The whole ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi are a time to reflect on oneself, ask forgiveness for past mistakes and to move forward in life. There are many variations to the traditions carried out during these 10 days- some pandals do visarjan after 2 and a half days or five days, others have varying degrees of pooja done and some even have skits performed. There is always a competition between pandals seeing which one makes the best decoration and ambience.

Many people who celebrate this festival at home also have elaborate preparations. Friends and relatives come home to pray to the Lord and seek His blessings. The idol is also well decorated to suit the festive ambience. The women apply rangoli at the doorstep. Everyone is dressed in their best clothes symbolizing a new beginning. Special Sweets like Modak and barfis are offered to the Lord. On the day of visarjan there is the chant of ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ in the air as people go on to immerse the idol in the sea or river.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi brings together one and all and helps to spread togetherness among people. On this special occasion, we can get the best out of it from Cubber, India’s first social economy application.
